On October 2017, the Tenth Church Evening service celebrated its 10-year anniversary of gathering as a community in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, I was commissioned to create a series of hand-drawn portraits to capture and reflect the tight knit community and its members.
Rather than creating conventional portraits or focusing on specific attendees or community members, I chose to capture the various and often hidden moments that happen before, during and after a regular church service: small conversations between friends before a service, quiet moments of spiritual devotion and solitude, joyful songs of worship and the warm gathering of families for the common purpose of drawing nearer to each other and their Creator.
All drawings were created on-site over several weeks leading up to the anniversary celebrations at Tenth Church during which they were displayed on-screen before and after the church service.
